Staff Profile

Laure Marest oversees the ancient numismatic collection, comprising more than 20,000 Greek, Roman, and Byzantine coins, seals, token, and medals. Her research interests include ancient Greek numismatics, Hellenistic history and portraiture, and the art of gem engraving from antiquity to the present. Educated in France, where she was born and raised, and in the United States, she has held curatorial positions at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has curated exhibitions on topics as diverse as collection history, ancient gems, and contemporary responses to classical art. A recipient of awards and grants from the Archaeological Institute of America and the Mellon Foundation, Marest has excavated in Albania and Italy.
